This win, coupled with Romania’s loss meant that Netherlands are the first European nation to qualify for the World Cup next summer. It also means that Van Persie is closing in on becoming the all time scorer for his nation.

His double saw him overtake Dutch football legend , and ex-Arsenal teammate Dennis Bergkamp in the list of leading scorers, as he now sits on 38 goals, while Bergkamp managed 37.

Van Persie is now in second place, only behind record holder Patrick Kluivert, who sits on 40 goals for his nation, and it is surely only a matter of time before the 30 year old overtakes him.

The Manchester United star netted his first for the Oranje back in 2005, when he grabbed the 4th in a 4-0 win over Finland in a qualifier for the 2006 World Cup.

Next month, Netherland’s World Cup campaign comes to an end with matches against Hungary, and Turkey, giving Van Persie the perfect opportunity to break the record.
