Robin van Persie will miss the Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday after suffering an ankle problem in Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton.

Southampton v Manchester United - Barclays Premier LeagueThe Dutch striker was substituted after 60 minutes of the defeat and after the match it was revealed that Van Persie was suffering from an ankle injury and will undergo a scan on Monday to find out the extent of the damage.

Undergoing the scan means Van Persie will miss the Ballon d’Or ceremony tomorrow in Zurich at which the striker is up for the Puskas award, which honours the years best goal.

Van Persie was nominated for his superb diving header against Spain at the World Cup and is in the final three for the award alongside Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez and ASPTT Albi striker Stephanie Roach.
