Robin van Persie netted his first goal back in the Eredivisie as Feyenoord defeated Groningen 3-0 in De Kuip.

After the defeat at VVV at the weekend, Giovanni van Bronckhorst shook up his defence with Ridgeciano Haps and Jan-Arie van der Heijden coming into the backline for Tyrell Malacia and Renato Tapia. For Groningen, Tom van de Looi came in for the injured Ludovit Reis in midfield.

In a disappointing first half it was Groningen who came closest through Yoell van Nieff, who saw his free-kick come back off the woodwork. Feyenoord lost Sam Larsson midway through the first half through injury as the hosts struggled to create clear-cut chances.

Eight minutes into the second half, Jens Toornstra broke the deadlock with an excellent volley from Bilal Basacikoglu’s cross. Jeremiah St Juste then doubled the lead on 72 minutes, linking with Steven Berghuis before firing past Sergio Padt.

Robin van Persie then made his entrance from the bench on 76 minutes and moments later the striker controlled the ball in the box before unleashing a curled shot into the bottom corner to seal Feyenoord’s victory.

Feyenoord move back above PEC Zwolle into fourth spot while Groningen are 13th.
