With Nicolai Jorgensen suspended, Giovanni van Bronckhorst opted for Dylan Vente up front, while Sam Larsson replaced Jean-Paul Boetius on the left-wing. For Utrecht, Gyrano Kerk remained up front instead of Cyriel Dessers.
The conditions in Utrecht were not great from the start with the rain and wind making it difficult on a pitch which was already cut up. The pitch played its part in the opening goal on 23 minutes as Larsson’s shot from outside the box took a horrible bounce in front of goalkeeper David Jensen and looped over the diving goalkeeper and into the net.
Utrecht dominated after the opener and deservedly drew level before the break when Gyrano Kerk seized on a poor clearance by Renato Tapia before slotting the ball past Brad Jones.
Early the second half, Utrecht had the better chances with Kerk firing just wide before Labyad forced Jones into a good save after being set up by Dessers.
With ten minutes to go Van Persie came off the bench and the striker had a good chance to win the game in injury time, but from a tight angle he fired over the bar with only Jensen to beat.
The point keeps Feyenoord in fifth and Utrecht in sixth.
