A 97th-minute Ricky van Wolfswinkel penalty was enough to secure FC Twente a 1-0 victory over Cambuur.

Before the game, the home crowd paid tribute to Henk de Jong, who had to step down as head coach earlier this week due to health reasons.

The hosts defended well in the first half as they restricted the visitors, who had not won any of their previous four away games in the Eredivisie. Virgin Misidjan did go through on goal just before the break but Cambuur goalkeeper João Virginia got to the ball first.

Van Wolfswinkel was then denied by Virginia early in the second half before Daan Rots hit the post. At the other end, Lars Unnerstall kept out an acrobatic effort from Roberts Uldrikis.

The game was heading for 0-0 but in injury time, Doke Schmidt handled in the box and a penalty was awarded by VAR. Van Wolfswinkel stepped up to seal the three points for Twente.

The win means Twente is fifth but they have closed the gap on the teams above them as AZ, Feyenoord and PSV all failed to win this weekend. Cambuur is in 16th.
