A controversial VAR moment was the main talking point as VVV Venlo and Groningen played out a 0-0 draw.

After an even first forty minutes, the game was marred by controversy. Referee Serdar Gözübüyük sent off Jerald Promes for a knee-high tackle on Ritsu Doan. Promes had made his way down the tunnel, but after being told to look at the images, the referee changed his decision to a yellow card. Promes returned much to the disbelief of Groningen.

The decision wiped out a great chance for Groningen to pick up a crucial victory and they could have been beaten in the second half. VVV had the better chances but Sergio Padt ensured the match ended in a draw.

The point means Groningen are 14th while VVV are 9th.
