For AZ Alkmaar goalkeeper Marco Bizot the victory over Ajax on Sunday was extra special. The stopper kept a clean sheet the day after his dad’s funeral.

The 2-0 win over Ajax was the 16th clean sheet of the season for Bizot and at the full-time whistle the goalkeeper’s emotion was clear to see.

Last week, Bizot lost his father but he played in both games against LASK Linz and Ajax.

Speaking to the AZ website, Bizot said, “Strangely enough, it (playing) helps.

“My wife and I have done everything this week to make us mentally strong. I am grateful that she helped me with that. We used everything to get through this week.

“Everything was dominated by Thursday and Sunday. The whole week built up to this moment. Everything came out at the final whistle. It was a bizarre time, a bizarre week.

“It was such a stressful week, so much happened. I also spent two or three days in Austria, of course, and Saturday was a very intense day with my father’s funeral. ”

Bizot made several excellent saves during the victory which moved AZ level with Ajax at the top of the table.
