johannsson dAZ Alkmaar started the brighter of the two sides, and after two missed chances they finally took the lead on 20 minutes, when Aron Johannsson’s cross was sliced into his own net by Patrick van Aanholt.

Marko Vejinovic hit the post with a long range effort, and Renato Ibarra failed to beat Esteban when one on one as Vitesse looked for a way back into the game. However following a long ball, two Vitesse defenders crashed into each other, allowing Aron Johannsson threw on goal, and the striker made no mistake with his lob over Piet Velthuizen to make it 2-0 on 42 minutes.

AZ Alkmaar defended their lead resolutely in the second half, and came close to making it 3-0 as Velthuizen was forced into an excellent save to deny substitute Denni Avdic.

Its now three games without a win for Vitesse, and they could slip five points behind Ajax, should the Amsterdam side win against Groningen on Thursday. Its now two wins in a row for AZ, and they are back in contention for a top three spot in 6th.
