Frank de Boer’s side knew a win over Vitesse, coupled with Feyenoord failing to beat RKC would see them win their fourth straight Eredivisie title with three games left. However with Feyenoord winning 2-0, and the game in Arnhem finishing 1-1, means Ajax will have to wait until next week against ADO Den Haag to claim their title.
Vitesse dominated the first half at the Geledrome, and should have been two or three goals ahead at half time, but they only had Bertrand Traore’s 25th minute finish from close to show for their first half efforts. Ajax were poor, and had goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen to thank for it only being 1-0 at half time, as the Netherlands number one brilliantly denied Traore, Christian Atsu, and Zakaria Labyad further goals.
Frank de Boer clearly had some harsh words to say to his side during the break, and two minutes after the restart Kolbeinn Sigthorsson broke through the defence to equalise.
After the hour mark it appeared both teams had settled for the draw, and neither could produce an opportunity to win the game. Ajax are now six points ahead of Feyenoord in 2nd with three games left, while Vitesse remain 4th.
