Vitesse went into the game unbeaten at home in the Eredivisie since January and they dominated the early stages with Jasper Cillessen having to deny Lewis Baker and the lively Denys Oliiynk in the opening twenty minutes.
As the first half wore on Ajax gradually grew into the game and Riechedly Bazoer should have given the Amsterdam side the lead but his shot from point blank range was kept out by Eloy Room’s leg.
Ajax bossed possession early in the second half but it was Vitesse who took the lead when Valeri Qazaishvili’s shot struck an Ajax defender and looped past Cillessen and into the net off the post.
The league leaders struggled to respond after the goal but leveled on 74 minutes as a corner was struck onto the post by Joel Veltman and Room could only push the ball to Viktor Fischer, who finished well. A minute later Ajax had the lead with Bazoer showing strength to race past Van der Werff and his shot from a tight angle squirmed under Room.
Bazoer came close to a second with a strike that struck the post, but Ajax did eventually wrap up the game just before the end when debutante Sam Hendriks crossed for Lasse Schone to net from close range.
Vitesse’s excellent home record ends as they remain fifth, while Ajax continue to lead at the top of the table.
