Vitesse went into the game looking to end a run of five games without a victory, but they found themselves 2-0 behind before the clock struck 15 minutes. Hicham Faik opened the scoring with a strike from distance before the midfielder netted his second on 14 minutes with a placed shot past Eloy Room.
The GeldreDome was stunned but Vitesse got the opportunity to get themselves back into the game on 25 minutes from the penalty spot with Arshak Koryan fouled by Jurgen Mattheij. Ricky van Wolfswinkel made no mistake from the spot to make it 2-1.
On the hour mark, Henk Fraser threw on Adnane Tighadouini and Milot Rashica as they looked for an equaliser and the substitution made a quick impact. Rashica broke from an Excelsior corner and the winger set up Tighadouini to beat Tom Muyters and make it 2-2.
The hosts pushed forward looking for a late winner, but Excelsior held on to claim a point. The point sees Vitesse rise to 7th while Excelsior are 12th.
