Wearing claret, and blue in a tribute to the heroes of the battle of Arnhem back in 1944, Vitesse started the brighter of the two sides, with Georgian Valeri Kazaishvili firing over from the edge of the box.
League leaders PEC Zwolle slowly made their way into the game, and Mateusz Klich’s low shot was well tipped away by Vitesse keeper Piet Velthuizen.
The home side took the lead on 35 minutes, when a ball into the box evaded the Zwolle defenders, and found on loan Chelsea midfielder Lucas Piazon all alone at the back post, and the Brazilian made no mistake with a calm finish.
Five minutes into the second half, Vitesse came close to their second, but Mike Havenaar’s towering header came crashing back off the bar.
Just before the hour mark the woodwork once again came to Zwolle’s rescue, with Kelvin Leerdam’s shot on the turn coming back off the post, with Havenaar putting the rebound wide.
The second goal did come on 68 minutes, with Leerdam heading in a Piazon corner from the left hand side, which was won after good work by Patrick van Aanholt.
In the final minutes, the home side made it 3-0, with Francisco Junior’s backheel finding its way to Piazon on the edge of the box, and he made no mistake with a low drive into the bottom corner.
Vitesse were excellent throughout the match, and fully deserved the three points, while Zwolle’s time at the top may be over, with PSV or Ajax set to take over when they meet later on.
