Vitesse Arnhem failed to move into the top four after being held to a 1-1 draw by ADO Den Haag.

Before the game, Vitesse’s fans unveiled a banner to honour the airborne forces that fought during the battle of Arnhem 74 years ago.

Vitesse started the game strongly and in the 18th minute, the home side had the lead when Tim Matavz headed in a Roy Beerens cross. The hosts then missed several chances to add another before the break as ADO Den Haag held on.

The visitors, who were hammered 7-0 by PSV last weekend, improved after the break and in the 65th minute they were level in fortunate circumstances. Goalkeeper Eduardo seemed to have a simple clearance but he hit the ball off of Nasser El Khayati and it bounced into the net.

Maikel van der Werff was shown his second yellow card before the end as Vitesse finished the game with ten men. ADO Den Haag couldn’t take advantage of the extra man and both teams settled for a point.

Vitesse remains sixth while ADO Den Haag are 10th.
