Defending champions Ajax got off to a false start in the Eredivisie as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Vitesse Arnhem. Riechedly Bazoer had a big impact against his former club.

Erik ten Hag made two changes to the side that defeated PSV in the Johan Cruijff Schaal last weekend with Hakim Ziyech coming in for Quincy Promes, while Sergino Dest was replaced by Nicolas Tagliafico. For Vitesse, former Ajax midfielder Riechedly Bazoer made his debut.

Ajax dominated possession early on but in the 13th minute it was Vitesse, who took the lead. Matus Bero’s strike from the edge of the area was deflected past Andre Onana by Perr Schuurs.

Chances came for the equaliser but Donny van de Beek fired over the bar before Daley Blind smacked the crossbar from distance. Finally, in the 30th minute, Van de Beek, who is being heavily linked with Real Madrid, netted the equaliser after being set up by Hakim Ziyech.

Van de Beek almost made it 2-1 before the break but his header lacked direction and went wide of the target.

Vitesse began the second half strongly and in the 55th minute they regained the lead. Bazoer went on a strong mazy run into the box before sending a low strike past Onana.

Razvan Marin then wasted a huge chance to equalise while Remko Pasveer made an outstanding save to deny Ziyech. Fifteen minutes from time, Dusan Tadic did make it 2-2 with a fierce strike from close range after being played in on goal by van de Beek.

Bazoer was shown his second yellow card before the end to cap a memorable debut but Ajax could not find the winning goal with a man extra.

A disappointing start to the campaign for Ajax but an encouraging result for Vitesse Arnhem.
