Ajax’s defeat to Twente opened up the chance for Vitesse to go top. Thomas Letsch decided to start with Oussama Darfalou over Loïs Openda and the decision was justified in the sixth minute. Oussama Tannane set Darlafou in and the Algerian striker netted the opener.
PEC Zwolle then took control of the game with Jesper Drost and Eliano Reijnders both firing over the bar. Mike van Duinen was also denied by Remko Pasveer just before the break.
Darfalou hit the post early in the second half as Vitesse failed to find a second goal. That would prove costly as Idrissa Toure saw red after VAR interfered on a challenge from the Juventus loanee.
From the resulting free kick, PEC Zwolle equalised through Jesper Drost, who took advantage of a messy situation in the box. Eleven minutes later, Matus Bero brought down Mike van Duinen, who scored the resulting penalty to put the hosts ahead.
The win lifts PEC Zwolle up to tenth while Vitesse Arnhem remains second.
