Ajax failed to reclaim the top spot in the Eredivisie from PSV Eindhoven after they were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Vitesse Arnhem.

Ajax were looking to bounce back from their defeat to PSV Eindhoven at the weekend with Alfred Schreuder bringing Davy Klaassen, Kenneth Taylor and Owen Wijndal into the starting eleven. Phillip Cocu’s Vitesse turned up on the back of a poor 4-0 loss at home to Sparta Rotterdam.

After only six minutes, a sharp cross from Steven Berghuis was netted by the outstretched leg of Dusan Tadic and Ajax had the lead.

Mohammed Kudus then hit the post and it seemed the hosts would find a second goal, but in the 25th minute, Vitesse equalised. Jurrien Timber saw his pass intercepted and eventually, Million Manhoef raced in on goal before slotting the ball past Remko Pasveer.

Davy Klaassen and Kudus missed chances to restore the Ajax lead before the break and in the second half, Schreuder made a triple change. Francisco Conceição, Brian Brobbey and Daley Blind came on.

Steven Berghuis and Blind both hit the crossbar for Ajax, but in the 74th minute, Vitesse stunned the Johan Cruijff ArenA. A long ball forward set Manhoef in again and he kept his cool to net his second goal.

Lorenzo Lucca was brought on and a minute later he equalised with a header from a Blind cross. The Italian also scored against PSV at the weekend.

Mohamed Sankoh almost made it 3-2 for Vitesse but he was denied by Pasveer, while Brobbey hit the post in eight minutes of stoppage time. Vitesse saw out the game to take a point.

Ajax remains second and Vitesse is 15th.
