Vitesse Arnhem has started their league campaign with a comfortable 5-1 win over Groningen.

The hosts went into the game on the back of their disappointing defeat to Basel in midweek but there was no European hangover in the GelreDome.

After an entertaining start to the game, Bryan Linssen opened the scoring on 21 minutes, reacting quickly to net Vyacheslav Karavaev’s cross from the right. Groningen fought back and got their equaliser in the 38th minute through Ritsu Doan, who slid in to net Tom van Weert’s cutback.

Vitesse ensured that they went into the break ahead as Alexander Buttner crossed for Matus Bero to power a header past Sergio Padt.

Just after the hour mark, Roy Beerens made it 3-1 after being put through by Linssen and minutes later, Chelsea loanee Jake Clarke-Salter added a fourth. Tim Matavz sealed a miserable evening for his former club by firing in a fifth with 20 minutes to go.

No further goals were added before the end but Vitesse start the season in great fashion. New Groningen boss Danny Buijs has plenty of work to do, though.
