Henk Fraser’s side started the season in impressive fashion as they hammered NAC Breda 4-1 last week and they began on top against Roda JC, who were looking to bounce back from their 4-2 defeat at PEC Zwolle. Tim Matavz sent an early chance wide before Hidde Jurjus saved well from Guram Kashia’s header.
Five minutes before the break, Vitesse broke the deadlock with Matavz pouncing on an error in the Roda JC defence before firing a great strike into the bottom corner.
Roda JC threatened early in the second half with Christian Kum sending a good chance over the bar before they were awarded a penalty on 63 minutes for a silly challenge by Milot Rashica. Simon Gustafson hit the post with the spot kick but it rebounded off Remko Pasveer and into the net.
The hosts were only level for four minutes before Thomas Bruns sent a free kick past Jurjus from 25 yards to restore Vitesse’s lead. Kashia then sealed the win with an excellent header from a corner.
Two wins from two mean Vitesse head to the top of the table, while Robert Molenaar’s first two games in charge of Roda JC have ended with no points and seven goals conceded.
