Undefeated in their last four games, Groningen began the game quickly and were ahead within the opening five minutes with Danny Hoesen slotting in from the penalty spot after Milot Rashica pushed Jason Davidson over in the box.
The visitors could have been further in front before the game hit ten minutes but both Oussama Idrissi and Mimoum Mahi hit tame shots straight at Eloy Room from inside the box. Vitesse then grew into the game and they created chances for an equaliser but Sergio Padt saved from Ricky van Wolfswinkel, van der Werff sent a long range shot just wide and Kelvin Leerdam headed a corner over the bar.
With two minutes left in the first half Vitesse were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box and Lewis Baker curled the ball past a hopeless Padt to draw the home side level at the break.
In the second half, Vitesse created the best chances with substitute Mitchell van Bergen forcing Padt into a good save while Baker shot into the side netting.
Fifteen minutes from time the match was postponed due to thunder and lightening but the game shortly resumed and Vitesse snatched the victory. A Baker free kick was headed at goal by van der Werff which forced Padt into the save, but the goalkeeper could not prevent Leerdam from following up to net the winner.
The win lifts Vitesse to sixth while Groningen are down in fifteenth.
