Vlaar missed the friendly defeat to USA last week, but was hoping to be fit enough in time to face Latvia on Friday. However the centre back pulled out of training on Tuesday, and has now been sent home with a calf injury.
The injury will come as a blow to boss Guus Hiddink, who was hoping to pair Vlaar alongside Stefan de Vrij for the must win Euro qualifier, but the Netherlands coach will not call up a replacement. Hiddink will go forward with De Vrij, Jeffrey Bruma, Bruno Martins Indi and Karim Rekik as his available centre back’s.
Better news for Netherlands was the reappearance of Memphis Depay on the training field after the winger missed Monday’s session with a slight foot injury.
