VVV Venlo held Utrecht to a 1-1 draw on Sunday.

VVV coach Hans de Koning missed the game through illness with Jay Driessen stepping in. He saw his side struggle at the start and only a good save from Thorsten Kirschbaum denied Simon Gustafson.

Jeroen Zoet also had to be alert to deny Oussama Darfalou’s header in a goalless first half. However, the striker netted from the spot six minutes into the second half to give VVV the lead after a Sean Klaiber handball.

VVV seemed on course for a victory but ten minutes from time Utrecht were awarded a spot kick. Gustafson’s initial spot kick was saved, but after VAR spotted encroachment, the penalty was taken again and this time the midfielder netted.

Neither side could then find a winner and the point means Utrecht are seventh while VVV are 16th.
