VVV Venlo are out of the bottom three after a much-needed 2-0 victory over Emmen.

Jay Driessen was in charge of the hosts for the third time since replacing Robert Maaskant and he decided to make his team play with a more direct approach.

That worked well for VVV as they took the lead in the seventh minute. Tobias Pachonik put the ball in the box and Johnatan Opoku rose to head in.

It was almost 2-0 before the break but Peter van Ooijen’s effort came back off the woodwork.

The bar then saved the hosts in the second half as it prevented Nikolai Laursen from netting the equaliser. Emmen were then reduced to ten men with Lorenzo Burnet shown a red via VAR with 20 minutes to go.

With a man extra, VVV eventually sealed the win in injury time with Van Ooijen curling the ball in.

The three points moves VVV to 15th while Emmen are 13th.
