VVV Venlo defeated Fortuna Sittard 3-2 on Saturday evening to remain fifth in the Eredivisie.

After half-an-hour, Fortuna led in fortunate circumstances as Finn Stokkers capitalised on an error Jerold Promes before slotting the ball past Lars Unnerstall.

However, VVV weren’t behind for long with Ralf Seuntjens reacting quickly to net on the rebound after Fortuna goalkeeper Alexei Koselev failed to hold onto the ball. Before the break, the hosts took the lead thanks to Peniel Mlapa, who found the net with an excellent volley.

Mlapa extended VVV’s lead three minutes into the second half with a close-range finish but Fortuna set up an exciting end when Andre Vidigal pulled one back late on.

Deep into injury time both Stokkers and Wessel Dammers went close to netting an equaliser but VVV held on for the three points. Maurice Steijn’s side stay fifth and ahead of Vitesse while Fortuna are 10th.
