Utrecht had to settle for a 1-1 draw at VVV-Venlo in their opening Eredivisie clash of the season.

Utrecht’s game with AZ Alkmaar was postponed last week, so John van den Brom’s side kicked off their season a week late. They visited a VVV side that won 5-3 at Emmen last week.

Mimoun Mahi and Gyrano Kerk started up front for Utrecht with Eljero Elia starting on the bench. Youngster Tommy st Jago also made his first Eredivisie start in the centre of defence.

After eight minutes, VVV could cheer again with Giorgios Giakoumakis, who scored a hat-trick last week, crossing for Guus Hupperts to slide in the opener.

Utrecht dominated after the opener but they had to wait until the hour mark to equalise. Sean Klaiber finished well after a combination with Mimoun Mahi.

The visitors went closest to finding the winning goal but Joris van Overeem and Mahi couldn’t find the net. Elia and Daniel Arzani came off the bench, but neither could inspire Utrecht to victory.

A false start for Utrecht, who have ambitions to break into the top four this season.
