The 31-year-old was a free agent after leaving English League One club Sunderland in the summer.

The midfielder has vast experience, including 272 matches in the English Premier League, and his tough-tackling style – picking up an average of one yellow card every three career matches – is sure to rouse interest in the club from Venlo.

The former Sunderland captain’s addition to the VVV squad has stirred an emotional reaction from Sunderland fans.
