The visitors began the game brightly with the front three of VVV causing the Excelsior defence problems. Striker Lennart Thy headed over the bar, while also seeing another effort well blocked.
Eventually, on the half hour mark VVV did take the lead through Clint Leemans who brilliantly lifted the ball over goalkeeper Ogmundur Kristinsson and into an empty net.
Excelsior failed to recover from going a goal down and VVV doubled their lead on 69 minutes with Ralf Seuntjens heading in his third goal of the season to seal the victory.
VVV now move into seventh spot while Excelsior are 13th.
