The striker has been in great form for AZ Alkmaar so far this season, netting six goals in the Eredivisie, making him the league’s top scorer ahead of PSV’s Jurgen Locadia.
Speaking to Fox Sports, the striker admitted he did look to see if he was included in the provisional Netherlands squad which was named last week. However, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Bas Dost, Jürgen Locadia, Vincent Janssen and Ryan Babel were preferred.
Weghorst said, “I did not count on it, but I did look for it for the first time, which I say quite honestly. In previous years, at Heracles Almelo and AZ, it was not real that I would be eligible for it.
“So I never had a chance. I never felt it could happen, but now I thought for the first time: I’m going to look. But no, unfortunately.”
Advocaat names his final squad for the upcoming games against Belarus and Sweden on Friday.
