Wijnaldum played the full ninety minutes of the match as Liverpool, who were without Virgil van Dijk, raced into a 4-1 lead in the second half before Manchester City netted twice late on to make it 4-3. It could have even ended 4-4 but the Premier League leaders missed a good chance in the final seconds.
After the game, Wijnaldum spoke to Ziggo Sport, “It is not the first time that we let the opponent come back through unnecessary mistakes. If you’re playing well, you’re angry.
“We did well, they played well too. I do not think a team has made it so difficult for them. We analyzed City and everything we had trained worked out.”
Wijnaldum praised the Liverpool fans for getting behind the side, “This is mainly about emotion. If the fans see that you want and give everything, they will stand behind you even more. It was very difficult, but that helped. ”
On whether he had given Van Dijk a tour of the city yet he said, “Not yet. We did not really have time for it yet. He is doing well, and has talked to everyone. I have only had to speak English for a year, now I can speak Dutch. I have a buddy here.”
