At the weekend, Van Dijk was on the end of a late challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford that left him with a serious knee injury. Van Dijk is expected to be out now for 6-8 months.

Ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Ajax on Wednesday, Georginio Wijnaldum spoke at a press conference and was asked about the challenge.

Wijnaldum slammed the Everton goalkeeper, “In my opinion (Pickford’s tackle) was stupid. I believe he did not want to injure Virgil but the way that he way into it, he didn’t care what happened after. I think we have had it a lot in games against Everton. They take it way too far. This was too much.

“Accidents can always happen but the way they were doing it was completely unacceptable. It makes it harder Pickford that didn’t get punished.”

The Midfielder said on the squad’s reaction, “We are still devastated. It’s different from normal. The way it happened is hard for us all to take. None of the players slept because of what happened on Saturday.

“Virgil is such an important player on and off the pitch for us. He’s a leader. But it’s up to us to show we can still put in good performances without Virgil. We have to deal with the situation.”
