Georginio Wijnaldum is happy with the atmosphere around the Dutch national team at the minute and hopes it continues.

After a difficult few years in Oranje, the Liverpool star has been praised for his performances in recent matches against France and Germany.

As part of the pre-game press conference on Thursday, Wijnaldum was asked if he was showing his old form for Netherlands, he said, “I do not know if I was the old Gini the last matches. I always try to give everything. The other players also make it easier for me, because as a team we do well. I try to hold on to this and want to help the team as well as possible. We are one team and it goes very well with the Dutch national team, that makes it easier for me.”

On the mood in the camp, Wijnaldum added, “The atmosphere is automatically less when you do not get results. Not so much between the players, but in terms of feeling. The feeling was different. Now the feeling is very good. You can see that we are busy with each other. Everyone is busy with each other, there are no groups. Now we are a little closer, all of the same generation and we love the same things. There is not such a big gap between the players.”

Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman praised the midfielder, “Gini plays at a great club at a high level. He has a lot of experience and is multifunctional in the midfield. I still think that his best position is a bit more attacking in the midfield, but he also shows that he can play well at Liverpool.

“He is a real team player, a connecting factor. Also within the team. He never wants to play in the foreground. I think he is ready in all respects to reach the level at the national level that he also gets at his club.”
