wijnaldum nu gSteve McClaren’s struggling Newcastle went into the tie with Liverpool second bottom in the league after a 5-1 loss to Crystal Palace last week.

However the Magpies upset the odds on Sunday with Georginio Wijnaldum playing a part in both goals as Newcastle won 2-0. The Dutch international broke the deadlock on 69 minutes when his shot was deflected into his own goal by Martin Skrtel, and although Wijnaldum will claim the goal it has gone down as an OG.

In injury time Wijnaldum settled the match in fine fashion as he raced onto Sissoko’s through ball before chipping the ball over Simon Mignolet for his seventh Premier League goal of the season.

After the match Wijnaldum spoke of his pride. He told Sky Sports, “It’s a really big result because, of course, we have a few difficult weeks behind us,”

“We had to react from the last game because the performance was not so good.

“We trained hard together and kept faith in each other.

“It is difficult to win the games but if you give all you have you can be proud. Today we fought to win this game and we were lucky that we won.

“It was difficult for Liverpool to create chances. We learned from the last two weeks where the performance was not good.

“When you play at home you want the fans behind you and you must give them something back.”
