Wijnaldum had been a free agent since having his contract with German side Bochum terminated in the summer but the defender is now set to seal a move to the MLS.
Philadelphia Union have announced the signing of the 24-year-old, brother of Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum, pending his visa approval.
Union Sporting director Earnest Stewart told the clubs official website, “We’re pleased to welcome Giliano to Philadelphia Union and are excited about the talent he adds to our defensive corps.
“As a young player who I have worked with before in the Netherlands, I know firsthand the potential he brings to our club. We are eager to integrate him within the squad and believe he has a bright future with the Union.”
Wijnaldum came through the Sparta Rotterdam and AZ Alkmaar academies before signing for Groningen in 2013. A year later he joined Go Ahead Eagles before moving to Germany with Bochum. However, Wijnaldum failed to settle at Bochum and has his contract terminated in the summer.
