A late equaliser by Erik Falkenburg earned Willem II a point against AZ Alkmaar.

AZ went into the game on the back of the 4-1 defeat to Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday and without Alireza Jahanbkhsh, who had a slight injury. The visitors created the better chances in a poor first half with Kostas Lamprou denying Wout Weghorst on two occasions, while Maumer Tankovic fired just wide before the break.

In the 70th minute, AZ thought they had netted the winning goal when Derrick Luckassen’s header ended up in the net via Willem II defender Jordan Peters. However, deep into injury time, Tim Krul came out of his goal to claim a long free-kick but Erik Falkenburg beat the keeper to the cross and headed into an empty net.

The point means AZ lose fourth spot to Utrecht while Willem II are 11th.
