The first half was not pleasant on the eye, with the home side dominating the possession without actually troubling Excelsior, who thought they should have had a penalty for a handball, which was deemed to be just outside the box.
A minute into the second half Willem II thought they had the lead, but Ben Sahar’s goal was disallowed for offside, before Samuel Armenteros squandered a glorious chance to make it 1-0.
Excelsior punished Willem II for the missed chances as Tom van Weert headed the visitors ahead on 64 minutes, but the lead only lasted three minutes before a handball in the box handed the home side a penalty. Armenteros made no mistake to make it 1-1, but despite pressure in the final 20 minutes Willem II could not find a winner.
Willem II now sit eighth, while Excelsior are 13th.
