Willem II, who haven’t won at home this season, went into the game bottom of the table after Roda JC’s 0-0 draw at Twente on Friday. They were presented an excellent chance in the first 45 seconds with Erik Falkenburg getting a free header inside the box, but the attacker’s effort was straight at Sergio Padt.
The Groningen goalkeeper then had to be at his best to tip Funso Ojo’s shot onto the post, before denying Bartholomew Ogbeche from close range. Ogbeche, who went into the game without a goal so far this season, then saw a shot cleared off the line. At the other end, Groningen struggled to create chances but they were denied a penalty for what looked a foul on Samir Memisevic by Darryl Lachman.
Finally on the hour mark Willem II took the lead with substitute Thom Haye netting on the rebound after his initial header was saved by Padt. However the lead only lasted nine minutes before Tom van Weert’s header was prodded into the net by Mimoun Mahi to draw Groningen level.
The game was heading for a draw but with five minutes to go Ogbeche made himself the hero by netting the winner with a close range header after Padt failed to hold onto a cross.
The victory lifts Willem II to 13th while Groningen are 15th.
