The game got off to a lightning start when after only 41 seconds Richairo Zivkovic raced onto an excellent through ball from Lucas Andersen before sending his shot into the net to give Willem II the lead. However the home fans joy only lasted two minutes before Tom van Weert equalised for Excelsior after combining with Daryl van Mieghem.
Willem II regained the lead through Dries Wuytens on 19 minutes, but once again Excelsior fought back and after Sander Fischer was fouled in the box, Jeff Stans equalised from the penalty spot.
Just before the hour mark the away side were gifted a goal as Van Mieghem pounced on an error by Dries Wuytens before beating Kostas Lamprou to put Excelsior ahead.
A desperate Willem II poured forward in search of an equaliser but both Jordens Peters and Wuytens sent headers wide as Excelsior held on.
The victory elevates Excelsior to 10th spot, while Willem II remain third from bottom.
