Thom Haye netted a 93rd-minute winner as Willem II recorded a 3-2 victory over Sparta Rotterdam.

The home side had lost their two opening games of 2017 but they got off to a good start on Friday as Fran Sol headed in Dico Koppers measured cross after only 18 minutes.

However, the lead only lasted two minutes before Sparta Rotterdam striker Zakaria El Azzouzi fired a placed shot past Kostas Lamprou and into the far corner.

Jordy Croux nearly restored Willem II’s lead quickly but his strike came back off the bar before Sol missed a great chance to net his second of the afternoon. With the final play of the first half, Willem II did take the lead again as Darryl Lachman capitalised on poor goalkeeping from Ryan Korsmit to net from close range.

Sparta Rotterdam barely threatened a comeback in the early stages of the second half but in the 69th minute they were level when Thomas Verhaar fired a free-kick over the wall and into the net.

The game seemed destined for a draw but in the final seconds of the game, substitute Thom Haye fired Willem II to a victory which lifts them to 11th place, while Sparta, now eight games without a win, sit 13th.
