Willem II’s sensational season continued on Saturday as they came away from title-chasing AZ Alkmaar with a 3-1 victory.

Willem II were the revelation of the season heading into the winter break after wins over PSV and Ajax left them sitting fourth. AZ, on the other hand, were second and the closest title challenger to Ajax at the top.

AZ started the game brightly and they were twice denied by the woodwork in the opening stages. Owen Wijndal hit the bar before Calvin Stengs struck the post.

In the 27th minute, AZ took the lead through Oussama Idrissi, who cut in from the left before firing low into the bottom corner.

AZ remained in control but in the 65th minute, Willem II equalised. Rody de Boer, in for the suspended Marco Bizot, made a good save but could not stop the rebound from Mats Köhlert.

Twelve minutes from time, Willem II stunned the hosts with a swift counter attack which ripped open their defence and allowed Vangelis Pavlidis to fire them 2-1 in front.

Mike Trésor Ndayishimiye then sealed the victory for Willem II with an excellent strike from distance which found the top corner.

AZ remains three points behind Ajax while Willem II climb above PSV into third.
