The centre-back started the match in Rome alongside fellow Dutchman Wesley Hoedt, but had to be taken off at half-time. De Vrij will now undergo scans at the hospital to determine how badly he has injured his knee.

The news will be a fresh blow for Netherlands boss Danny Blind, who is already without Jeffrey Bruma and Virgil van Dijk for the ties against Bulgaria and Italy later this month.

Blind names his final squad later this week and will be hoping that De Vrij recovers in time.
