During the Champions League clash with Valencia last season, Blind felt dizzy and sat on the ground. Blind was then diagnosed with an inflamed heart muscle, which resulted in a preventive operation to install a defibrillator (ICD) under his arm.
On Tuesday, Blind collapsed during Ajax’s friendly with Hertha Berlin and let out a loud scream. He was able to walk off the pitch as he was substituted and after the game Erik ten Hag confirmed that the defender’s ICD had gone off.
He told Ziggo Sport, “His IDC went off. After that it went okay again. He is doing well, he feels good and has no complaints. He has changed and feels fine. Whether he will train again tomorrow? We will be conducting research and waiting to see what the results are, and from there we will make decisions.”
Playing professional sports with a pacemaker? Sounds like a death wish to me. Give up the game, life is a lot more precious.
