Art Langeler handed out three debuts for the game with Richairo Zivkovic (Utrecht), Thomas Ouwejan (AZ) and Gervane Kastaneer (ADO Den Haag) given their chance to impress.
However, it was a strong Portugal side that bossed the opening stage and they took the lead on the half hour mark with Iuri Medeiros firing a free kick past Hidde Jurjus.
The lead didn’t last long though, with Zivkovic netting from the penalty spot after a foul on Ouwejan.
In the second half Netherlands held Portugal and nearly nicked the win late on but Vincent Vermeij couldn’t get his close range header on target.
The draw marks the end of an era for the Dutch U21’s with a number of players now too old to feature. Jurjus, Wesley Hoedt, and Joris van Overeem all played their final games at this level. Karim Rekik (Olympique Marseille), Ricardo Kishna (Lazio), Joost van Aken (Heerenveen), Joshua Brenet (PSV), Yassin Ayoub (FC Utrecht) and Nathan Aké (AFC Bournemouth) were also initially in the squad, but pulled out for various reasons and will no longer be available for the U21’s.
