Alfred Schreuder was able to welcome back Steven Bergwijn, Steven Berghuis and Mohamed Kudus, who all started on the bench. Twente had Ramiz Zerrouki back in their starting eleven.
Twente began on top and they hit the post twice in the opening stages through Vaclav Cerny and Michel Vlap. Ricky van Wolfswinkel also went close as the Ajax defence struggled to get a grip.
In the 35th minute, Ajax was reduced to ten men as Devyne Rensch saw red for bringing down van Wolfswinkel when he was heading through on goal.
Ajax managed to get to the break goalless but a barrage of whistles rained down from the crowd. Schreuder made a change at the break as Brian Brobbey went off for Kudus, but Twente remained in control for the early stages of the second half.
The visitors controlled the ball but Ajax also came close with Kenneth Taylor putting a shot wide, while he had a penalty shout waved away.
Towards the end, Twente pushed but they could not find a way past goalkeeper GerĂ³nimo Rulli, who had a strong game.
Ajax drops to third in the table and could be fourth by the end of the weekend should PSV win. Twente are fifth but only one point behind Ajax.
