Netherlands never produced so many defenders like ultimately, it’s a good thing, but when i first saw van basten it was then that i fell in love with dutch football and it went on with bergkamp seedorf van nistelrooy among many others, these are the players i miss nowadays.
Netherlands may win a major tournament whith strong defensive play, but i would prefer a second place with games like the one against brazil on 1994 wc,where they lost 3-2, but came back from a 2 goals disadvantage with goals from bergkamp and aron winter aganst one of the best brazil teams with bebeto romario cafu tafarel dunga and branca who scored the winner from 40 m distance, what a game!!!!!
This mentality of preferring to lose while looking good, than to win while playing for results, is exactly why Oranje rarely gets past the semi-finals of major tournaments. Every champion has great defence and plays for the result first. I would much rather win 1-0 and have strong defence than lose 3-2. Defence wins championships.
Maybe you’re right, i respect your opinion, but i dont see a winner Holland by playing italian catenaccio, and if i were to choose between 2 defensive styles of play i would definitively go for italian stile.
Total football is a unique dutch brand, if you see today’s barcelona is founded by dutch masters from Cruijf and van gaal to rijkaard, a good youth menagement combined with visionary managers can make holland a winning team.
Momentally Holland doesnt have neither visionary managers nor young talents.
