The away side went into the game in poor form, and after 30 minutes they were down to ten men with Michael de Leeuw shown a straight red card for plunging his head into the back of Tom Beugelsdijk after a confrontation with the defender.
With the man advantage ADO Den Haag took control, but chances were few and far between. Mike Havenaar’s header denied by Sergio Padt, while Kevin Jansen fired wide as the home side struggled to find the breakthrough.
Then with fifteen minutes left Groningen took an unlikely lead in stunning fashion. Defender Rasmus Lindgren hammered a 30-yard-free kick past a shocked Martin Hansen and into the bottom corner.
ADO Den Haag could muster no response and Groningen held on for a victory which keeps them 12th, with the home side one place above.
