Gus Poyet was sacked by the Premier League strugglers on Monday, and the club have moved quickly to appoint former Netherlands and Rangers boss Dick Advocaat on a deal that runs until the end of the season.
Advocaat, who will be officially presented by Sunderland on Tuesday, announced the deal to Voetbal International, “I’m still in a dark hotel now, but will soon be working in the Stadium of Light. It is initially purely for this season.”
He added to AD, “This is something I always wanted to do, the Premier League.”
“As a manager that is where you want to work.”
The 67-year-old was recommended to Sunderland by Frank Arnesen and hopes to name former PSV midfielder Zjelko Petrovic as his assistant.
