Dick Advocaat has looked back on his time in charge of Ronaldo at PSV Eindhoven.

Advocaat and Ronaldo both arrived in Eindhoven in 1994, and the Brazilian has stated in the past that he left PSV after only two years because of the head coach.

However, speaking to Voetbal International, Advocaat said, “Yes, that’s how he said it, huh. Ronaldo was injured for a long time in that second year. We then did it with René Eijkelkamp in the striker. When Ronaldo came back, he wanted to start in the cup final against Sparta, but I could not make that. Ronaldo was angry about that.

“But we have had no problem. Later when he played at Internazionale, he came to De Herdgang and he also trained along with us. Ronaldo is without doubt one of the best players I have worked with. I thought Ronaldo was a very sweet boy.”

Advocaat felt “paternal” towards the striker at times, “It sometimes happened that Ronaldo was so tired after an away game that he sat down on the bus next to me and fell asleep with his head on my shoulder. He was also very open and also had issues, but not as much as Romário. Everyone liked Ronaldo because of his qualities. “
