Advocaat was originally appointed Sunderland boss in March on a short term deal lasting until the end of the season, and after guiding the club to Premier League club to safety, the 67-year-old rejected the chance to stay on and was believed to be retiring.
However Advocaat has now decided to accept a one-year-deal to coach Sunderland next season after being persuaded by the clubs board.
Advocaat told the official Sunderland website, “After a lot of discussions with Ellis and Lee, they convinced me that I am the right man for the club.
“It was a great feeling to be part of Sunderland in the last few months, the experience was something very special and after talking with Lee, Ellis and of course my family, we all agree it is the right decision.”
