Advocaat is set to step down from his role at the end of the month and has told the KNVB that he feels his assistant Ruud Gullit should be promoted to head coach alongside a more experienced manager. Fred Rutten has been suggested as his assistant, but whether the former Feyenoord, Schalke and PSV boss would be interested in working under Gullit is uncertain.
Advocaat’s second choice would be Ronald Koeman with his brother Erwin coming in as an assistant. The duo worked together at Southampton and Everton before Ronald was sacked last month. Koeman is currently the favourite to take over the role.
KNVB director Eric Gudde stated this week that they would be taking their time and look to appoint a new head coach by March next year.
