The experienced coach tried to ease the pressure on his players by claiming that the tie will not be crucial, despite Sparta lying five points from safety.

Advocaat said, ”I do not believe that tomorrow’s Eredivisie match away to Roda JC is crucial because after that we still have 7 matches of the season remaining.

”We always try to win our games but we must also take into account our opponent. Tomorrow’s match is just as important for Roda JC as it is for us.

”We are aware of the qualities that Roda JC has and they have been playing well lately even though they have not picked up many points. It’s going to be an interesting match tomorrow.

”I believe we have to play in an opportunistic way and not by building the play out from our defence.

”The most important thing is that we win. I have only won two matches since I have been here at Sparta Rotterdam. I have experience at Sunderland in needing to get results. You must give the squad confidence that they can do it.

”There have been errors made at FC Twente, Sparta Rotterdam and Roda JC that all 3 clubs are fighting against relegation. Roda JC have a beautiful stadium. When I played for them their stadium was poor. It would be a shame for Roda JC to disappear from the Eredivisie.

”I believe the choices that the relegation candidates have made in recent years has lead to them being involved in a relegation fight. Sparta Rotterdam spent five years playing in the Jupiler League for example.”
