The 68-year-old was widely expected to leave after the 2-2 draw with West Ham on Saturday, with reports stating Advocaat was already back in Netherlands after informing the club of his decision.
On Sunday, Sunderland confirmed the departure with Advocaat saying in a statement, “I have made the decision to go after only eight games as I felt it was important to give everyone time to turn things around.”
Advocaat was appointed Sunderland manager in March on a short term deal, but after guiding them to safety the Dutchman decided to stay on permanently. However the club have had a poor start to the season and Advocaat has decided to depart with Sunderland sitting second bottom.
